Numerology is an ancient metaphysical science. Numerology is the idea that the universe is a system that can be analyzed by assigning numbers to letters. These numbers can then be used to help us to better understand the world and ourselves as individuals. The exact roots of numerology are a bit of a mystery, but the first written records of numerology appear in Babylon and Egypt. There’s also evidence that numerology was used thousands of years ago in China, Rome, Japan and Greece. The Greek philosopher Pythagoras who lived around 500 years before Christ studied Chaldean numerology for 22 years in Egypt. Pythagoras was one of the most well-respected philosophers and mathematicians in his day. He developed a new way of assigning letters numerical values in a system known as the Pythagorean Number System.

The Pythagorean Number System is popularly used in modern numerology today. Some also use the Chaldean system. In My Multidate we use The Pythagorean Number System to compute numerological charts for our members. The main difference compared to Chaldean numerology is that in Chaldean numerology no letters of the alphabet are assigned to the number 9. Pythagoras however didn’t mind assigning some letters to the number 9, and his system has prevailed to be the most widely used in the western world today.

In order to compute a personal chart using numerology we start with both your birth date and your full name at birth. We don’t need your exact time and place of birth like we need for creating an astrological chart. The biggest difference compared to astrology is that your full name at birth plays a huge role in your chart. In an astrological chart your name has no impact at all. That’s why we include numerology as one of our matchmaking tools in addition to astrology and several other tools. With numerology we can sink our teeth into your name and have a good chew on it.

In My Multidate we focus on six elements of the numerological chart. Since we analyze your time of birth in detail with astrological and Human Design analyses, we focus mainly on elements which are derived from your name. We do however also compute your Life Path Number and put a lot of significance in that number. Your Life Path Number is calculated from your birth date and outlines the opportunities, challenges and lessons you will encounter during this lifetime. In order to calculate your Life Path Number, we add all the numbers in your birth date. Then we add the two digits in that number together until we only have only a one-digit number. This is your Life Path Number.

Here’s an example. If you we’re born on the 1st of February 1968, the calculation looks like this:

1 + 2 + 1 + 9 + 6 + 8 = 27 = 2 + 7 = 9

The numbers we derive from your name is your Expression Number, Soul Urge, Personality Number, Cornerstone and Capstone. We calculate your Expression Number by adding the numbers that corresponds to the letters in your full name. We reduce the number to a single digit. This number reveals your talents and abilities instilled in you at birth. In order to find the numbers that corresponds to the letters in your name we use the Pythagorean Number System. Here’s a table which shows how the letters corresponds with numbers according to Pythagoras:

If your name is Peter Green, your calculation would look like this:

7 + 5 + 2 + 5 + 9 + 7 + 9 + 5 + 5 + 5 = 59 = 5 + 9 = 14 = 1 + 4 = 5

In order to calculate your Soul Urge number, we add the vowels in your full birth name. It represents your inner cravings, likes and dislikes, which are usually kept rather private. For Peter Green it would look like this:

5 + 5 + 5 + 5 = 20 = 2 + 0 = 2

Your Personality Number is found by adding all the consonants in your full birth name. Your Personality number reveals your surface traits, how you like to dress, and how you tend to act with other people. For Peter Green it would look like this:

7 + 2 + 9 + 7 + 9 + 5 = 39 = 3 + 9 = 12 = 1 + 2 = 3

Your Cornerstone is the first letter in your name at birth. For Peter Green it is 7. This number tells us about how you approach both difficulties and upswings. What the cornerstone number reveals most, is the attitude of an individual towards life.

Your Capstone is the last letter in your name. For Peter Green it is 5. It demonstrates your ability to see projects and ideas through to the end. This translates into your "finishing" number. When you look at your Cornerstone and Capstone you can determine how easy it is for you to start and stop important processes and projects.

Each number represents different personalities and circumstances. Some numbers are more compatible than others, and some combinations can be quite difficult. We’ll go through each number in separate articles, but in order to give you an idea of the compatibility between the numbers the following chart is very useful. We use this chart in our compatibility analysis.
